Healthcare providers usually need BLS — not Heartsaver

Nurses, physicians, EMTs, paramedics, healthcare students, and other clinical personnel typically require the American Heart Association BLS Provider course. Confirm the exact course required by your employer, school, licensing agency, or program before paying.

What does each Heartsaver course cover?

The two courses below address different types of emergencies. Review the skills and target audience for each before choosing your class.

CPR • AED • Choking

Heartsaver CPR AED

Approx. 2½ Hours

The American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED Course teaches participants to recognize cardiac arrest, provide high-quality CPR, use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and respond to choking emergencies in adults, children, and infants.

Adult, child, and infant CPR

Upon successful completion, participants receive the applicable American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED Course Completion Card, valid for two years.

First Aid Only

Heartsaver First Aid

Approx. 2½ Hours

The American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid Course teaches participants how to recognize and respond to common medical, injury, and environmental emergencies until professional medical help arrives.

CPR AED + First Aid

Heartsaver Combo Class

Approx. 5 Hours

This combined class includes both the Heartsaver CPR AED content and the Heartsaver First Aid content in one instructor-led course. It is commonly selected when both CPR/AED and First Aid training are required.

Ask the employer, school, licensing agency, credentialing program, adoption agency, or other organization requiring your certification for the exact course name and required modules. Common uses listed on this page are examples only. Students are responsible for selecting and registering for the correct class, and Visalia CPR cannot guarantee that one course satisfies every outside requirement.

Course Format

Choose instructor-led or online + hands-on skills

Students may have more than one training format available depending on the specific course. Use the classroom schedule for 100% instructor-led training, or use the Online + Skills / Skills Only schedule when completing a blended-learning path.

Course Duration

Class and skills-session times vary

Heartsaver CPR AED: approximately 2½ hours.
Heartsaver First Aid: approximately 2½ hours.
Heartsaver CPR AED + First Aid Combo: approximately 5 hours.
Hands-on Skills Sessions are approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Actual timing may vary slightly depending on the course, required modules, required skills, and student needs.
